HEIJINGPOT:
On the day of Heijingpot, in the morning or afternoon, the groom's family along with relatives and guests visit the bride's family with fruit and food items (specially for the Bride and her friends). The bride's family invite their relatives and guests to be a part of this happy occasion.
After the ceremony is over the bride serves her friends the various special food items brought from the groom's place which lasts till late evening. Bride's friends and relatives present her gifts.
WEDDING RITUALS:
The groom, his family and many guests goes to bride's residence and they are greeted by three woman at the bride's entrance with a plate covered with banana leaf containing betel nut and betel leaves. They are accorded a warm welcome inside. The groom is seated at a separate enclosure first and after some time to the center of the hall.
The bride, adorned in the traditional clothes (Potloi), is now brought to the hall. After some rituals, the bride takes seven circles around the seated groom (amidst the sounds of traditional music) and garlands the groom first and the groom garlands the bride next. During this period three women each from both the families go to a nearby pond along with a lamp (lantern) and release a pair of Lata fish (presumed to be a male and a female) into the water, symbolizing the bride and the groom. It is considered a good omen if the fishes move side by side in the water. The guests are then served dakshina (token money) and sweets for having graced the occasion. After the wedding the bride leaves her home along with her family members (except mother) and guests for the groom's home. The bride is greeted by her mother in law accompanied by another two ladies at her new home and take her to her room. The bride party is served dakshina and food and return home.
